ABCO Mission Statement

 

The American Board of Clinical Optometry Mission is to:

  • Improve the quality of optometric care available to the public;
  • Promote and advance the science and art of optometry related to the eye and related structures;
  • Support and enhance education and competency in optometry;
  • Recognize doctors of optometry that have proven their competence and their ability to provide the highest quality optometric care to the public, to recognize doctors of optometry that have sought to facilitate and improve prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disorders affecting the eye and related structures, and to recognize doctors of optometry that have sought and obtained training and knowledge in a sub-specialty within the profession of optometry;
  • Establish, maintain, and recognize those that maintain high standards of excellence in the practice of optometry;
  • Grant and issue to optometrists, duly licensed by law, certificates ("Certification") or other recognition of knowledge in the practice of optometry, or any of its sub-specialties, and to suspend or revoke same; and
  • Determine by examination or otherwise, as may be determined by the American Board of Clinical Optometry, the fitness of optometrists to receive and maintain Certification by the American Board of Clinical Optometry.
